One to One Tuition
I offer one-to-one bespoke workshops from my Northumberland studio. Join me for a private workshop to hone your skills in carving and/or printing water-based woodcut (mokuhanga), or the art of hand scroll making, paper backing prints and fine cloth or Japanese book structures (sewn and folded). The workshop will be catered to your needs and desires and include a homemade lunch, teas, coffees and cake. The day runs from 10am - 5pm. Please arrange your own transportation and accommodation. Contact me for recommendations and to arrange a suitable date for your tuition.
I still have some availability this year for bespoke one-to-one teaching sessions. I offer anything from 1 day to 5 day studio sessions catering to your requirements. This year I have welcomed students wishing to deepen their understanding of mokuhanga and guide two students through the intricate art of hand scroll making. If this is something you'd like to gift yourself please do get in touch or purchase a voucher via my PRINTS page.
“Lucy is an exceptional tutor. Her extensive knowledge, skill and patience coupled with her enthusiasm, encouragement and creativity make a workshop with her a 100% positive experience.
I learnt so much over the course of my three-day one to one with her. She listened to what I wanted to achieve and helped me to get there, pacing our time just right all the while providing lots of different insight and inspiration. I finished my three days feeling like I’d made good progress, armed with new skills and inspiration that I am excited to use within my art practice.”

"I’ve long admired Lucy’s beautiful work with Mokuhanga and her sensitive, disciplined engagement with traditional processes. So it was a profoundly affirming experience for me to spend four days of intense making one-to-one under her thoughtful guidance. It was such a delight to begin each day in the bright, windswept wilds of Northumberland, greeted by sweet Edna at the peaceful Dovecote studio.
“Our time together was perfectly attuned to my goal to learn more about traditional Japanese mounting techniques—paper-backing cloth, and prints, (urauchi), constructing a hand-scroll (maki mono) and a trick book (karakuri byobu). Lucy's insightful presence as a guide is as generous as it is gently exacting; each moment in the studio—whether experimenting with different materials, mixing glue, mounting prints, sharing delicious homemade lunches, or simply enjoying the rhythm of the workday—felt intentional and quietly transformative. She creates companionable conditions favourable to learning throughout—deeply listening to her student, to the materials, to the landscape.
I leave with prototypes, information, inspiration, recharged with energy — and feeling reconnected to my heart and hands, to the spirit of the practice, and to a kindred creative soul."
