During my time in  Japan, a fascination for paper making grew and was cemented with participation in the Handpaper making workshop at ‘Awagami Paper making Factory’ on Shikoku island. Drawing on the important cultural relationship between paper making and printmaking, this course is an introduction to Japanese paper making techniques with mulberry fibres alongside Western cotton rag paper making. Focusing on the different techniques adopted to make a sheet of washi using a bamboo suketa and a cotton rag sheet using a mould and deckle, these skills allow you to create elegant handmade papers to incorporate into a contemporary art practice.

A variation on this course has recently been delivered as a 3 part workshop for The Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester for their 'Handmade' series of weekly Age Friendly workshops to celebrate the 1 year (Paper) anniversary of the gallery's re-opening.
