Mokuhanga (Water-based Woodblock Printmaking) Residential Workshop, Hollin House, Highgreen, Northumberland, Sunday 25th - Wednesday 28th July 2027.

Next Summer you are invited to join me at Hollin House, nestled in the beautiful Northumberland National Park, for a unique Mokuhanga Workshop experience. You will be guided through the captivating technique of mokuhanga within an exquisite nature-rich environment in which to be inspired. The 4-day, 3-night retreat, includes 3 teaching days, beginning late-afternoon at 4pm on Sunday and ending at 1pm on Wednesday.

During the last week of July you are invited to join me to learn mokuhanga at Hollin House. Mokuhanga is perfect for anyone interested in a non-toxic, table-top printmaking technique. Over the workshop you will learn the process of transferring a drawing or image to Japanese plywood and carve various colour separation wood blocks, following in the tradition of Japanese Ukiyo-e and Sosaku hanga printmaking. With no mechanical press required, only a hand held baren, you will learn the techniques to achieve various nuanced print effects, from woodgrain (mokume zuri) to sesame (goma zuri) and the well known colour gradation (bokashi), synonymous with mokuhanga. You will register your mulberry paper (kozo washi) with your multiple carved blocks through the simple but brilliant kento registration system. You will be sure to take away a deeper understanding and appreciation of how these prints are created along with a love for both the process and results of this accessible, water-based printmaking method which provides endless possibilities, including those to be used in combination with other printmaking techniques.

Enjoy retreating at the end of each day to the comfort and luxury of Hollin House, a bright and spacious five bedroom, five bathroom recently renovated private home on the grounds of Highgreen Manor. The workshop provides  an opportunity to unwind on woodland walks, explore the vast moorland and view the night sky within the classified Dark Skies Park. You will receive a daily buffet breakfast, home cooked vegetarian soup and rainbow salad lunches, along with a good supply of tea and cake. The evening meals will be an opportunity to cook together as a group with all the recipes and ingredients provided for you.

There are just 5 exclusive residential places available, maintaining an intimate atmosphere and plenty of one to one attention. You are invited to arrive at Hollin House at 4pm on Sunday 25th  and leave at 1pm on Wednesday 28th July 2027. The residential price is £890 for a double bedroom with en-suite shower room or a twin room with an adjacent roll-top bath room. The price includes all workshop materials, tuition, accommodation and food.
