Residential Workshop in Scroll Making, Northumberland, UK
Japanese Hand-Scroll Making Residential Workshop, Hollin House, Highgreen, Northumberland, Tuesday 4th - Friday 7th August 2026.
This summer you are invited to join me at Hollin House, nestled in the beautiful Northumberland National Park, for a unique scroll making experience. You will be guided through the captivating technique of crafting a Japanese hand-scroll within an exquisite nature-rich environment in which to be inspired. The 4-day, 3-night retreat, includes 3 teaching days, beginning late-afternoon on Tuesday and ending at lunchtime on Friday.
This residential workshop promises to guide you through the intricate process of creating a hand-scroll and deepen your understanding of this book form and its potential. Each stage of the process encourages a slow and mindful approach from seamlessly attaching paper and prints together, sculpting the wooden dowels to paper-backing linen covers. You are encouraged to bring your own artwork (prints or drawings on washi paper) to the workshop to use in creating your hand scroll. Using traditional craft techniques and materials sourced from Japan, you will gain the skills and techniques to create beautiful cloth-bound scrolls in the future. This unique workshop is catering to artists and printmakers who want to extend their knowledge of book arts and build on methods of presenting their work.
Enjoy retreating at the end of each day to the comfort and luxury of Hollin House, a bright and spacious five bedroom, five bathroom private home on the grounds of Highgreen Manor. The workshop provides an opportunity to unwind on woodland walks, explore the vast moorland and view the night sky within the classified Dark Skies Park. You will receive a daily buffet breakfast, home cooked vegetarian soup and rainbow salad lunches, along with a constant supply of tea and cake. The evening meal will be an opportunity to cook together as a group with the recipes and ingredients provided for you.
There are just 6 exclusive places available, 5 residential and 1 non-residential, maintaining an intimate atmosphere and plenty of one to one attention.
